What Is The Double Major Program?

With its double major program, University of Kyrenia offers its students who is studying in associate and undergraduate programs, the opportunity to obtain a second diploma in other fields besides their own undergraduate programs.

Double Major is a program preferred by those who wish to continue their professional and personal development with different undergraduate programs, or by students and staff who do not want to limit themselves with the department they graduated from.

It enables students attending an undergraduate program to receive a second bachelor’s degree in another department within the same faculty or in any department in another faculty, if they fulfil specific requirements and are accepted.

University of Kyrenia Double Major Application and Acceptance Requirements

Applications for Double Major or Minor Programs are made to the Rectorate with the application form on the date determined by the University Senate.

It is not possible to enrol in more than one Double Major or Minor program, or to both Double Major and Minor programs at the same time.

Students can attend a double major undergraduate program at the earliest at the beginning of the third semester of the major undergraduate program, and at the latest for four-year programs at the beginning of the fifth semester, for five-year programs at the beginning of the seventh semester, for six-year programs at the beginning of the ninth semester, and for the major associate degree program at the earliest at the second semester and at the latest at the beginning of the third semester. In order for the student to apply to a Double Major program, he / she must have taken and succeeded all the courses in the major undergraduate program up to the semester he / she applied, the grade point average at the time of application must be at least 2.30 and should be ranked among the top 20% of the related class of the major program. For admission to these programs, the approval of the relevant departments and the decision of the relevant administrative board or boards are required.

The Double Major or Minor Program is carried out under the supervision of the Double Major Program Coordinator appointed by the Head of the relevant department in order to guide students in determining the courses of the programs and in planning the periods in which they will be taken, and to ensure that the program is carried out in accordance with its purpose.

Double Major Minor Program Creation

Double Major and Minor Programs can only be carried out between departments within the body of University of Kyrenia. The Double Major Program and / or Minor Program is prepared upon the application of the department that demands the program, upon the approval of the Faculty Board of Directors and the approval of the Senate. The department that offers the program determines from which department students will be accepted to this program.

The graduation credit of the Double Major Program cannot be less than one third of the graduation credit of the department implementing the program. Regardless of the graduation credit of the related department, the lower limit is 36 credits. The Minor Program consists of at least 18 credits. The courses and credits to be taken in a double major, second undergraduate or minor program are determined upon the approval of the senate upon the recommendation of the relevant departments and faculty boards, by taking into account the field qualifications determined by the programs. The related Double Major undergraduate program must be organized in a way that the student has the learning outcomes defined according to the knowledge, skills and competencies that he/she should gain at the end of the program.

The quota for both programs is determined by the Senate on the condition that it is between 5% and 20% of the number of students in the first grade of the department that year, and is announced by the Rectorate before the beginning of the semester / year. If the number of applications exceeds the quota, it is again under the authority of the Senate to decide how the ranking will be performed .

Application and Acceptance

Duration of Program

Students who are entitled to graduate from the Major Undergraduate Program but cannot complete the Double Major or Minor Program are given an additional two semesters to complete the Double Major, Second Degree Program or the Minor Program. For Double Major’s Program students this period can be extended with the reasoned decision of the Faculty Board of Directors.

Withdrawing From The Program - Academic Dismissal

If a student wishes, he / she has the right to withdraw from the Double Major, Second Degree or Minor Program. Students who want to withdraw from the Double Major Second Degree or Minor Program and those who do not fulfil any of the conditions in this Regulation are asked to leave the Double Major, Second Degree or Minor Program upon the decision of the Board of Directors. A student who does not take courses for two consecutive semesters in a Double Major or Minor Program will be disenrolled from the programs. The courses that the students who leave the programs have achieved apart from their major programs within the scope of the Double Major, Second Degree or Minor Program are converted to non-credit courses. Students who are dismissed from the Double Major Second Degree or Minor Program for whatever reason cannot apply to these programs again. A student whose GPA falls below 2.50 in the Major Undergraduate Program is dismissed from the Double Major, Second Degree or Minor Program. It is not possible to get a Double Major Second Degree Diploma or Minor Certificate before graduating from the Major Undergraduate Program.
